Dejan Lovren Joins Liverpool

Liverpool have signed Croatia International Dejan Lovren, 25, from Southampton for £20 million. Lovren now joins Saints team mates Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert in moving to Merseyside this summer.

The 6’2” centre back only joints Saints last season, arriving on the South Coast for a fee of around £8.5 million from French Club Lyon.

Liverpool finished second last season and are spending big after selling star player Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75 million. They have made 5 signings so far this summer, buying Lazar Markovic from Benfica and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen. A deal to buy Loic Remy from Queens Park Ranger fell through after the France International failed a medical for unspecified reasons.

On signing for Liverpool, Dejan Lovren was more than delighted. He said, “It’s a dream come true. I’m happy and glad to be here. I’m proud and can’t wait to start. I know we have millions and millions of supporters – Liverpool is more than a club. After I played at Anfield last season, I said to myself: ‘One day I hope I’ll be able to play here for Liverpool.’ The fans will know from the first minute that I’m a player that will give 100 percent on the pitch.”

More on Dejan Lovren:

Dejan Lovren began his career at GNK Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Olympique Lyonnais in January 2010. Lovren spent 3 and a half seasons with the Ligue 1 team, winning the 2012 Coupe de France. Suarez Set For Barcelona Move

Suarez Set For Barcelona Move

Liverpool will have further talks with Barcelona over the transfer of the Uruguay International Luis Suarez. The Reds were adament before negotiations began that they would not sell the forward for less than the value of his confidential buy-out clause, believed to be between £70 million and £80 million.

Opening talks seemed to have been productive and it is seen as a significant step forward with the club confident that a deal can be done in line with their valuation. Further talks and discussions will occur in due course although nothing has been finalised yet.

Barcelona have the option of offering Chile forward Alexis Sanchez as a makeweight in negotiations and it is understood at this stage that discussions are taking place considering both options – a straight money deal and also he option of a player plus cash alternative. The latter seemed more plausible but it would depend on Alexis Sanchez, who is not that keen at this moment to make a move to England.

Luis Suarez is currently banned for 4 months for biting Italy’s defender Giorgio Chiellini at the FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil. However, the 27 year old forward has since issued a statement apologising for his actions. Barcelona are suspected to have had major influence in procuring as they have stepped up and began to lay the foundations for a move.

Last summer, Arsenal failed in their attempts to sign Suarez after a bid of £40 million was made in the mistaken assumption that it would be sufficient to trigger Suarez release when it only entitled them to begin negotiations. Since then, Liverpool have moved to make Luis Suarez contract more definitive in terms of his release price.

Sergion Aguero Injured

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero is set to miss the remaining World Cup after suffering from a muscle tear in the 3-2 victory over Nigeria.

Though Aguero’s injury could not be confirmed immediately, his miss would be a major blow to the South American’s campaign to capture a third World Cup, this time, on the soil of their great rivals Brazil.

Argentina Newspaper Clarin stated on its website,”This morning the worst news was comfirmed. He has a tear and won’t be able to play any more in the World Cup.” Aguero was taken off during the first half of the match against Nigeria which gave them top spot in Group F.

Argentina next play in Sao Paulo on 1st July, a last 16 knock-out game against Switzerland. Fellow strikers Ezequiel Lavezzi or Rodrigo Palacio could take Aguero’s place. Will they be able to step up and lead Argentina to the quarter-finals?

In other news,

SUAREZ HAS BEEN BANNED FROM ALL FOOTBALL FOR 4 MOINTHS

This came after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Suarez after he appeared to have bitten Italy’s defender Giorgio Chiellini. FIFA has announced that Luis Suarez will serve a 9-game ban for biting Chiellini. On top of this, Suarez has been banned for 4 months from any football-related activity, which means that he is unable to represent Liverpool until the end of October.

His 9-game international ban begins immediately, preventing him from playing against Colombia in Argentina’s last 16 tie and 8 more competitive games. Suarez will also miss Liverpool’s first 9 league games of the season. He also misses the Champion League group stages, which will already be 3 games old when he returns on 1st November.

Suarez has also been hit with a fine of £65,700.

Suarez Strikes Again

Luis Suarez strikes again.

And by this, I don’t mean Suarez scoring another World Cup goal. Suarez has bitten yet another player. And this time the victim is non other than Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. In the match between Italy and Uruguay – where both teams have to win in order to qualify for the knock out stages – Uruguay has won 1-0 against 10-men Italy.

To refresh some of your minds, these are the scenes of the incident. The image above shows Suarez sinking his teeth into the shoulder of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini and the image below shows Chiellini pulling down his shirt to display the bite marks on his shoulder.

Luis Suarez Bites Luis Suarez Bites Georgio Chiellini

The first sign that some form of clashing has occurred was the sight of Suarez holding his mouth. Not too far away on the floor from him was Chiellini holding his shoulder. The first impression one would make is ‘Had Suarez been elbowed in the mouth?’

As the replays were made, there was a collective look of disbelief amongst the viewers. Did the Dracula Suarez just strike again? Chiellini then got up and went to the Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez to protest, pulling down the neck of his shirt to expose what appeared to be a bite mark.

The referee had not seen the incident and could do nothing about it. Moments later Uruguay scored, knocking Italy out of the World Cup and almost certainly bringing the curtain down on the international careers of some of the great Italian players of their era – Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi.

Luis Suarez previous controversies:

2010 July – Handles the ball on the line to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra time in the World Cup 2010 quarter-finals. Asamoah Gyan misses the resulting penalty and Uruguay won the shoot-out to reach the semi-finals.

2010 November – Given 7 match ban for biting PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder while Suarez was playing for Ajax.

2011 December – Given 8 match suspension and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra despite protesting vehemently.

2012 February – Refuses to shake hands with Patrice Evra at Old Trafford and is described as a “disgraced” by Sir Alex Ferguson.

2013 April – Receives a 10-game ban after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

This is certainty not the first time Suarez has used his mouth literally against opponents. As FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Luis Suarez, he could well be on a lengthy ban. But then again, the fact that Suarez would receive his punishment well after the game would do nothing to change the results of the game.

Needless to say, if the referee and seen what Suarez did and gave his disciplinary action, the results would come out differently. Suarez would no doubt be shown the red. The fact that Suarez have been escaped punishment during the match has cost the Italians badly. Suarez has been denying his involvement.

He was quoted telling Uruguayan media,”These things happen in the box. We were in contact, chest against shoulder, and I got a knock to the eye.” Yet, when Suarez fell, video replays clearly shows him holding onto his teeth in pain, as Chiellini showed a visible bite mark.

How can Suarez not feel any sense of shame at his behaviour? At the end of the day, it makes me wonder if Suarez deserves to be on the field at all? I question if Suarez actually respects the game. Certainly, for the ill-disciplined but lucky Suarez, he can be proud to announced that he had just achieved a hat trick of bites while the Italians pack their bag and head home with nothing but pride.
